If you’re a new mum in Dubai, chances are you’ve heard the nursery chat come up a lot, when to start, how to choose, and whether it’s normal to feel all kinds of emotions about it (spoiler: it is!).

At British Mums Dubai, we’ve teamed up with Miné Thompson, mum and Head of Early Years at Jumeirah International Nurseries (JINS), to answer the most common nursery questions mums ask, and to help make this big step feel a little less overwhelming.

I feel guilty leaving my baby – is that normal?

Completely. Every mum feels this at some point, and the JINS team really gets it. Many of their teachers are parents too, which helps create a nurturing, understanding environment that feels like a second home. They keep you closely connected through their daily updates app, so you will know how your little one’s day is going, from snacks to nap times, as well as the learning activities throughout the day.

How does the settling-in process work?

JINS takes a gentle approach that is focused on the individual child. It starts with a friendly Parent Meet & Greet and short sessions over the first two weeks, so children (and parents!) can ease in at their own pace. There might be tears, and that’s okay, the team is there with open arms, kind words, and plenty of cuddles. You will also have access to their JINS Family Club, which hosts regular events and workshops to help you feel part of a supportive community.

“Will the nursery help ease my worries?

Absolutely. Miné shares: “I was a nervous mum too before joining the JINS team, and it was my son’s wonderful experience thanks to the love and attention from his teachers, that inspired me to support other parents on the same journey. Trust takes time, but the right nursery will hold your hand throughout the whole journey.”

“Do nurseries help with weaning and meals?

Yes. While allergens and first foods should be introduced at home, the JINS team supports weaning with care. You can pack meals from home (just no reheating), or opt for BabyEats, a fantastic meal plan tailored to each stage of weaning. Teachers also gently encourage children to try new foods in a fun way.

“What’s the teaching style like?”

It’s a beautiful blend, EYFS, Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and the Curiosity Approach, all wrapped in JINS’ unique Positive Education philosophy. That means your child’s happiness, character, and confidence are just as important as academic learning. It’s a holistic approach that really nurtures each child and their individual interests and strengths.

“Are Nursery hours flexible?”

Very. For children under 3, you can choose between 3, 4, or 5 days a week. The core hours are 8 am–1 pm, with aftercare available until 6 pm. For FS1 and FS2, it’s five days a week to prepare them for school. JINS also makes drop-offs easier with ample parking and easy access, which is a big plus for busy mornings!

“What are the teachers like?”

Passionate, professional, and truly caring. All of our teachers are qualified; they either hold a CACHE Level 3 or 5 qualification, or have BEd, PGCE, and PGCEi qualifications, which are equivalent to those held in Schools. All are KHDA-approved and bring years of experience in nurturing young children in a safe, loving environment.

Should I choose FS1 in a nursery or a big school?

It really depends on your child. JINS FS1 offers the same curriculum as leading schools like Sunmarke School and Regent International School, but in a smaller, cosier setting, ideal for kids who need a gentler start. Larger schools offer more facilities and larger social settings, so trust your instincts, there’s no wrong answer.

If I don’t need childcare, what’s the best age to start nursery?

There’s no “right” age, it’s all about your child’s readiness. JINS welcomes little ones from 45 days old, but many families start gently with a few days a week. It’s a great way to build routine, confidence and social skills at a pace that suits you and your little one.

A Hidden Gem in Ibn Battuta Mall

JINS Ibn Battuta is just one of 10 JINS centres in Dubai and the UAE, offering a top-quality early years’ experience from 45 days up to 6 years (That’s Year 1, at JINS JBR and Palm Jumeirah!).

Think: warm, home-like spaces, small class sizes, and a strong sense of community, all in convenient and close by locations.
