ABOUT ME

I came to Dubai in 1993 when my father took a job with the airline. It looked very different back then, with a lot less green and a lot more sand. DWTC was the tallest building, and you couldn’t go to the supermarket without bumping into your teacher /doctor / best friend. My parents have since retired back in the UK, but I am here with my husband (also a 30-year-long expat) and two children, Frankie and Izzy. By day, I am the author of the children’s book series Alfie & Oak and a copywriter, but I am chief tickle-giver, story-teller, and broken-toy-fixer by night.

WHERE IS HOME?

Dubai. I was born in Surrey in the UK but moved here in 1993. Seven houses, three schools, and almost 30 years later, I am still here, married and a mum to two gorgeous little rascals who will also call this place home for as long as they can.

WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU WERE YOUNGER?

I changed my mind about every 5 minutes, but I am pretty sure architect, actress/film director, and lawyer were on the list at some point… ‘anything Formula One related’ was at the top for a very long time.

WHAT DO YOU DO?

I play around a lot with words! I am a children’s book author, having just launched my first book (of three!) in a series about a little expat boy and his dog, wondering about the world around him. I also run my own desk as a copywriter (catchy copy or taglines – I’m your girl) and creative producer (creating activation and campaign concepts for leading brands).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTIVITY TO DO WITH YOUR CHILDREN?

A bit of everything – we are either having a splash in the pool, a kickabout in the garden or munching popcorn on movie nights.

HOW DO YOU SPEND YOUR WEEKENDS?

Exploring. My husband and I grew up here, but now we have our own little ones; it’s a whole new world. There is so much for them to do, so we try and tick one off the list, a new park or playground or attraction, each weekend.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MOVIE?

Pre-children, Forrest Gump was always my comfort movie, and I could binge-watch the Marvels and the James Bonds. These days, Pixar’s Up (‘balloon Kevin’) or Moana (‘Mana’) is usually found on repeat in our house.

IF YOU COULD EAT ONE MEAL FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Spaghetti Bolognese. My husband’s spaghetti Bolognese to be exact. Just keep filling up that bowl, and I will spend the rest of my days in absolute bliss.

WHO’S YOUR CELEBRITY CRUSH?

After binge-watching Emily in Paris, I’m partial to the French chef.

WHICH DESTINATION IS ON YOUR BUCKET LIST TO VISIT?

Portugal. Though I have been, once with my best friend on a girl’s trip and again with my husband (where we got engaged), I’d now love to go and spend a week there with the kids travelling around. The people, the culture, the food – love it all.

WHAT’S YOUR GUILTY PLEASURE?

Absolutely cheesy rom-coms on Netflix and eating Nutella from a jar.

IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPER POWER, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Time travel. Not to go forward, not to interfere, but to go back to key moments in my life and experience them again and again. Also, endless energy – my son thinks he is Sonic the Hedgehog.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT LIVING IN DUBAI?

I had such an amazing upbringing here, and I am so happy I can do the same for my little ones. Dubai is what you make it. For us, it is worldly, a melting pot of cultures and backgrounds that we can learn from, our friends are family, and there is a never-ending list of things to do and see.
