Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women with 1 in 8 women being diagnosed in their lifetime. Every woman, under 18 or over 50, and everyone in between should perform a regular self-check at least once a month. According to UAE health guidelines, all women over 20 should be ‘breast aware’ while women aged 30 to 40 should get a clinical breast exam (by a doctor) done. Women aged over 40 should do a clinical breast exam along with a mammogram.

The good news for women in Dubai however is that we have access to the Mediclinic City Hospital’s Breast Centre, the first truly specialised unit for the treatment of breast cancer, and other breast diseases, in the UAE.

Comprehensive Cancer Centre

The Breast Centre is part of Mediclinic’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC) and looks after the patient’s entire journey – from diagnostics, imaging and treatment services, to psychological support, a dedicated breast nurse and palliative care for patients. The CCC is the first centre of its kind in Dubai to combine diagnostic procedures with the treatment modalities of surgery, medical oncology and radiation therapy, making them the best choice in healthcare provider when to comes to the treatment of breast cancer.

Specialist team

Looking after all patients are an exceptional team of multidisciplinary specialists from all the different areas involved in breast cancer detection and treatment. All team members have been trained in the treatment of breast disease and more specifically breast cancer. This is very important to note as when it comes to treating cancer, doctors who specialise in one particular cancer and see many patients a year, achieve much better results than doctors who only treat a few cases a year.

The Triple Assessment

When diagnosing breast cancer, The Triple Assessment routine is used. The Triple Assessment, as the name implies, has three parts: clinical examination, imaging (mammography and ultrasound) and pathology (bloodwork). Once the team has discussed all aspects of The Triple Assessment, a plan is formed for the management of your treatment. The breast surgeon consults with you and provides you with all the facts, enabling you to make an informed decision about your preferred treatment pathway.

Not only are you partnering with the best specialists, but the CCC has sourced the most advanced medical technology available globally, including Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography (PET-CT) Scans, Computerized Tomography (CT) scans and 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (3T MRI).  The CCC also offers digital mammography for the most accurate breast cancer checks, a full on-site pathology laboratory, and conventional radiology and ultrasound facilities.

CCC houses the specialties such as breast imaging, breast surgery, dietetics, emergency medicine, haematology, medical oncology (chemotherapy), nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, surgical oncology and pathology/laboratory.

It’s unclear as to what causes breast cancer, therefore, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. Make sure that you contact the Mediclinic City Hospital’s Breast Centre today for your appointment.
