Don’t be beaten by sleepless nights or baby blues. Whether you’re a first time mum or already have a brood, there’s no doubt that a new baby zaps up vast amounts of time and energy, leaving you with precious little time to spend on yourself and your appearance.

Yet with a few time saving changes to your postnatal health and beauty routine, even the busiest of women can ensure that they are yummy mummies. 

After your bundle of joy has arrived, your body needs time to heal from the birth and cope with the post partum or breastfeeding hormonal changes, so the emphasis should focus on being kind to yourself and using the most natural and gentle products. 

Go for glow

Even if you’re a true English rose or a pale Celtic beauty, a hint of a tan gives all complexions the illusion of health, while making us appear slimmer. 

Self-tans are a great option for creating a safe golden glow, but if you’re breast-feeding it is important not to use chemical-based products, which could harm your baby. 

A brand that’s built up quite a reputation in the UAE, is TanOrganic that’s safe to use in pregnancy. It is 84% aloe Vera based and therefore free from harsh chemicals, parabens, colours and fragrances. If you’re a time-pressed mum, you can build a weekly application of tanning into your hectic schedule by pairing it with the versatile moisturising dry oil from the same range. This can be used as an after-sun, cuticle oil, hair treatment oil and to prevent stretch marks. It’s also able to be applied on newborns to help with dry skin, or as a massage oil – meaning it has lots of uses! 

The big cover up

Make-up disguises a multitude of skin problems, so it may become your best friend in the months following the birth of your baby and the ensuing sleepless nights. Arm yourself with the following: a good concealer, blusher, mascara and eyebrow pencil or powder. Concealers can quickly hide flaws without the need for a full foundation application. A quick dusting of blusher – pink for cool undertones and peach for warm – will give the impression of health and vibrancy, even if you’re feeling anything but! A slick of mascara opens up tired eyes – particularly if you concentrate on the upper eyelash, as this draws the attention upwards and away from eye bags – (which often come par for the course with a newborn in tow!) 

Similarly, well-defined eyebrows lift the eyes and draw attention away from dark circles. If you have more time, add eyeliner to the top lid and apply white coloured eye pencil to the bottom, in the inner rim of the eyes, to waken up your eyes. 

 Chop chop

Hair is often a challenge for new mums. Post partum hair shedding means your mane can be thin and you may experience bald patches or straggly regrowth around the forehead. While a dramatic colour change isn’t recommended due to the hair’s fragile condition, a new cut can give you a confidence boost and disguise any problems. The “lob” is a good option for new mums. This shoulder length style is easier to manage than long hair and can still be tied back. A fringe can disguise regrowth but needs regular upkeep. Instead of blunt bangs, go for a long, sweepy fringe that doesn’t need regular cutting and avoid layers if hair is thin. 

Get moving

Exercise not only helps you get back in shape, but also boosts serotonin levels, stabilising your mood. Many mums choose not to do vigorous exercise until six weeks after the birth, or after your postnatal health check up. If you’ve had a C-section it’s essential to wait until your gynecologist gives you the green light for exercise, and to avoid infection, don’t swim until any postnatal bleeding stops (or until you are advised to do so by your gynecologist). Weather permitting, walking with your baby in the pram is a good, gentle way to get in shape. If you prefer to exercise in a group, look out for classes especially designed for new mums such as Mummy and Baby yoga or buggy fit. Check out for a range of classes.
