British Mums is all about community. It’s the #1 stop for British mums who are living outside of the UK to meet like-minded expats, ask for advice and receive genuine recommendations. It’s a trusted group made up of individuals who share common interests.

British Mums is genuine, trusted and real. It’s a group of mums, ran by mums, for mums. We’ve put together this guide on using the British Mums website and Facebook Groups to make your experience so much better!

British Mums Facebook

Community Managers

Also known as the group admins or moderators, British Mums has a selected few Community Managers to help manage the group. To view who the Community Managers are, you can visit the members section of the group and it will show all admins and moderators. You can also look at their posts within the group to see if there is an admin badge. Please do not message the Facebook profiles of our Community Managers. Because they’re not your Facebook friend, your message will end up in their spam or other messages folder and can be missed. Rather send an email to info@britishmums.com for a quicker response.

Announcements

Group announcements are posts that appear at the top of your Facebook group in an announcements section. Instead of displaying a preview of announcements, unread announcements are now shown in full at the top of the discussion tab within your group. Previously read announcements now appear in a dedicated announcements tab in the group.

British Mums regularly add announcements to the Facebook group. These announcements include messages, discounts, special offers, competitions, events or news from our partners, community or even national news, such as updates on the Coronavirus or legislative changes. So do make sure that you have a look at the announcements at least once a day.

Post Topics

With Facebook group engagement rising, some groups are now truly massive (British Mums Dubai is at almos t14,000 members!), which can make it difficult to find posts on the topics you’re most interested in. In order to better cater to such usage, Facebook offers post topics tags for groups, which enables group members and admins to categorise group posts accordingly. Post topics can be created, edited and deleted only by admins and moderators, and each group can have up to 150 post topics.

Topics include discounts and offers, school and education, events, competitions, charities, community guidelines and more.

Search Function

Before you post a question, it’s a good idea to first search the group to see if your question was not asked by someone else.

To search for posts in a group:
    1. From your News Feed, click Groups in the left menu and select your group.
    2. Click  on the right.
    3. Enter names or keywords that appear in the post or the comments of the post you’re searching for.
    4. Filter search results by selecting options on the left.

Reporting Posts

If you find that a post goes against our community guidelines, you can report the post for review by a Community Manager. These include advertising, mean comments or inappropriate content.

To report a post:
  1. Click  in the top right of the post.
  2. Click Find support or report post.
  3. To give feedback, click the option that best describes how this post goes against our Community Standards. Click Next.
  4. Depending on your feedback, you may then be able to submit a report to Facebook. Click Done.

Turn on Notifications

Instead of taking the time and effort to write a comment just so you can receive update notifications, you can use a feature that has been part of Facebook for ages. Go to any Facebook post (it doesn’t matter if it’s in a group, on a friend’s timeline, or in your feed), and click the three dots in the upper-right corner. From that group of options, choose “Turn on notifications for this post”. You’ll get notifications anytime someone comments, even if you never did. Never post “F” again!

Anonymous Requests

Do you have a sensitive question that you don’t want to publically post? Maybe you’re considering divorce, are having issues at work or with your child’s school, or perhaps you have a medical condition you’re worried about.  Please send any requests to info@britishmums.com and not to the personal accounts of Community Managers. Please note that only anonymous posts deemed to be of a sensitive and/or of a personal nature may be posted. Please note that due to the amount of requests received, we cannot engage in back and forth messages between you and group members. If someone posted a comment and you’d like to engage with them, best is to send them a direct message.

Mentorship

Mentorship is available within select groups. Group members can choose their mentorship partner and get one-on-one support from another group member.
Mentorship can last up to 10 weeks. Once completed, you’ll still be able to see everything you and your partner shared.
Group members must be 18 or older to offer or request mentorship.

To find a mentor:
  1. From your News Feed click Groups in the left menu and select your group.
  2. Click Mentorship in the left menu.
  3. Click Find a Mentor.
  4. Add some information about yourself and the topics you need help with then tap Submit.

If you sign up, you’ll also be contacted by group members who want to mentor you, and you can decide if you want that person to mentor you. Once you’re paired with a mentor you’ll be connected in a Messenger chat.

If your group already has mentors, you can also search for a mentor by looking at the list of people that have already signed up to offer help. Click Request Mentor to reach out.

To become a mentor:
  1. From your News Feed click Groups in the left menu and select your group.
  2. Click Mentorship in the left menu.
  3. Click Be a Mentor.
  4. Add some information about yourself and the topics you can help people with then tap Submit.

You’ll be notified when people are interested in mentorship, and you can decide who you want to mentor.

You can also reach out directly to anyone you’d like to mentor. If your group already has members interested in mentorship, go to the People Looking for Mentorship section and click Offer to Mentor.
To end a mentorship:
  1. From your News Feed click Groups in the left menu and select your group.
  2. Click Mentorship in the left menu.
  3. Below People You’re Mentoring, find the mentorship you’d like to end.
  4. Click  and select End Mentorship.
