Why It Matters to Us All

Why should we, as mums, care about prostate cancer? It is simple, because the men in our lives, that’s our husbands, fathers, sons and brothers – are vulnerable to this silent killer.

Prostate cancer is just that – quiet, sneaky and potentially deadly. In 2020, it affected more than 1.4 million men worldwide, causing more than 375,000 deaths. These numbers are staggering and emphasise the urgent need for awareness and action.

Understanding Prostate Cancer

The prostate is a small walnut-sized gland tucked away in the male reproductive system. Its size grows larger with age and if that prostate gets too large, chances are that it can cause trouble. When abnormal cells start multiplying uncontrollably, they form a tumour, leading to prostate cancer. The scary part is that it doesn’t show any noticeable symptoms in its early stages. That’s why early detection is absolutely crucial

Screening Methods: Know Your Options

Dr. Omer Al-Derwish says men over the age of 40 should start with regular checks. Early screening is the saving grace! By catching prostate cancer when it’s just starting out, thereis a much better chance of successful treatment. The sad news is that prostate cancer doesn’t have any dramatic symptoms. So, regular screenings are key!

There are four ways to test for prostate cancer:

1. PSA Test: A simple blood test that checks for elevated PSA levels, indicating any potential problems in the prostate area.

2. Digital Rectal Exam (DRE): It is a bit uncomfortable, but it is the best hands-on approach to checking for irregularities. Doctors can feel for any lumps or bumps during this procedure.

3. Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI): Using an MRI machine, this scan can spot suspicious areas, guiding doctors to take a closer look if needed.

4. Prostate Biopsy: This is the ultimate truth-teller, so if something doesn’t seem right, medics will take tiny samples from the prostate for a detailed examination.

Take Action Today

As women, we tend to be chattier than men – so why not use this hidden gift to kick start conversations about prostate cancer at home? Let’s encourage our other halves to talk to us and their healthcare providers; ask the right questions while also consider getting a screening, especially if there’s a family history of prostate cancer.

Remember, we are not just talking about saving lives; we are talking about making sure a better quality of life for the men we care about. So, let’s chat, spread the knowledge, and make a difference – one conversation at a time!
