In this political drama, Kiefer Sutherland plays the role of President Tom Kirkman who is sworn in following an explosion at the State of the Union address which claims the lives of the President and all other members of cabinet.

4. Suits

If you haven’t heard of Harvey Specter then you are in for a treat (but also – where have you been?). Suits is a legal drama series set at a law firm in New York. Specter, a high-profile corporate lawyer, hires a college dropout, Mike Ross, as his associate. While Specter believes in Ross’ prodigal talent, to keep their jobs, they have to keep the secret of Ross’ lack of qualifications between the two of them. Currently six series (between 12-16 episodes per series) and has been renewed for a seventh.

5. Homeland

A spy-thriller series starring Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison, a CIA officer with bipolar. She comes to believe a US Marine, Nicholas Brody (played by Damian Lewis), who was held captive by al-Queda has been turned by the enemy and poses a threat to the US. There are currently six series of 12 episodes each and it has been renewed for another two series – with the eighth expected to be the last. 

6. How to Get Away with Murder

Another gripping series from the mind of Shonda Rhimes(creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal). It stars Viola Davis as Annalise Keating, a highly regarded law professor who becomes entwined in a murder plot along with five of her students. Davis has won multiple major awards for her role in the series, including an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Three series of 15 episodes each, renewed for a fourth.

7. Westworld

A sci-fi Western thriller (yes, there is such a genre now) based on the 1973 film of the same name. It holds the title for being the most watched first season of an HBO original series ever. Westworld is a futuristic ‘amusement park’ which allows its wealthy visitors to live out their fantasies through artificial intelligence – with no consequences for their actions.

8. The Night Of

This political thriller series from Shonda Rhimes, has been running since 2012 and is still going strong. Starring Kerry Washington as Olivia Pope, the series is loosely based on the life of Judy Smith, a former press aide to the George H.W. Bush administration.
