As seasoned expats, there’s nothing we love more than finding some true hidden gems that really portray culture and tradition, and that’s exactly what The Waterfront Market over in Deira is all about! Dubai has always been dependent on its waterways and fishing has been a tradition deeply embedded in the history of the UAE. Whilst it’s amazing what’s developed in the last 50 years, we love the nod to the Emirate’s heritage that The Waterfront Market provides, bringing fresh produce and great deals directly to us residents.
The Waterfront Market offers a fabulous opportunity to support local as well as shop (and haggle) for the freshest catch around. Whilst renowned for the plethora of seafood, the Waterfront Market is a source for other fresh goods including meat and poultry, spices and fruits & veggies.
To prove exactly why The Waterfront Market is a must visit destination, we sent British mums Camilla and Hannah down with an AED 500 budget (think Supermarket Sweep Dubai-style) to do some shopping, haggling, and finally some well-deserved sampling of their chosen catch. To give them a head start, Dale Winton… we mean Chef Christos (the resident market Chef) gave our mums a tour and some great tricks of the trade to make sure they got the most value for their money.
Here’s what British mums Camilla and Hannah had to say…
“Over half term, we visited The Waterfront Fish Market in Deira and it was well worth the trip to Downtown for this authentic Dubai experience. We started at the fish market where the knowledgeable stall holders were happy to help. We were lucky to be accompanied by Chef Chis, the market’s resident Chef, who advised us on which fish to buy for various dishes or a BBQ. An extensive range of fresh fish and seafood is available at a great price (especially after a little haggle!) and you can have your purchases cleaned and prepared for a little extra.
We worked our way through the meat market picking up some beautiful wagyu steaks (3 for AED 60!) before heading to the fruit and vegetable market, where there was an amazing variety of fresh produce as well as a fresh juice station. We highly recommend taking advantage of the trolley service where a staff member assists you through the market with your purchases. We finished our trip at the Yahya Seafood Restaurant on the waterfront for a delicious lunch of sea bass and king prawns fresh from the market.
The market was clean and well-organised, with a range of different stalls selling things such as baked goods and traditional gifts. In addition, the free underground parking, ATMs and baby change facilities make for a hassle-free, wonderful experience for the whole family!”
The Waterfront Market boasts the freshest and largest selection of fish in Dubai and some of the best seaside views from its promenade restaurants, and now is the perfect time to experience the best of both worlds.
Visitors to the Waterfront Market are encouraged to turn their visit into a unique culinary experience, whereby shoppers can choose their fish in the market, have it gutted and deboned, and then make their way to the restaurants on the promenade, where they can have their fish prepared to their liking, be it grilled or poached, there and then!
The Waterfront Market restaurants offer an unparalleled experience with a stunning sea view, with restaurants stretching the length of the waterfront promenade along the gleaming Deira Corniche waterway. The ‘buy your fish and we will cook it for you’ service is available at Yahya Seafood Restaurant and Paluto Restaurant at AED 15 per person.
