Did you know that in 2020, Breast Cancer became the most common cancer in the world and in the UAE? It is a startling fact, and one that is typically associated and mostly diagnosed in women over 40 years of age. Although uncommon and considerably rare, it is important to understand that women in their 30’s may also be affected by it.

Early detection is truly a game-changer!

When we spot Breast Cancer in its initial stages, there are so many more medical options for us fewer harsh treatments, side effects and an all-around better quality of life. Plus, early diagnosis significantly reduces the stress and anxiety that often comes with cancer treatments.

So, as females (and many of us with daughters), how can you take charge of your breast health? It starts with something as simple as a Breast Self-Examination (BSE):

Mirror Check: Stand at your bathroom mirror, dressing table – wherever is comfortable, put your hands on your hips and look for changes in size, shape or skin texture.
Arms Up: Then have a look for changes in breast appearance.
Lie Down: On your back, with a pillow under your right shoulder. Use your left hand to check your right breast, then repeat on the left side, feeling for lumps or texture changes in a circular motion.
Nipple Examination: Check for inversion or discharge.

Remember, consult a breast surgeon if you notice any changes. Self-exams are not a substitute for professional clinical examinations.

Taking action if you notice a change

If you find anything unusual or suspicious, that is where advanced screenings like ultrasound and mammograms come in. Mammograms are generally for women aged 40 and above generally with a breast ultrasound, while for women below 40, ultrasound will be a diagnostic test. An MRI would be recommended if you are at high risk.
