The Swiss International Scientific School Dubai (known as SISD) has been open since 2015 but is still one of Dubai’s best kept secrets when it comes to schooling. With it’s new secondary campus that’s just opened this September, it’s now offering almost a thousand children a new and innovative way to learn.
SISD offers something that’s very unique to Dubai; not only does it have a curriculum that’s like no other, but it also offers day or boarding for students as well as offering the chance to become multilingual in a European language – fast!
It follows the highly regarded International Baccalaureate Programme accommodating tiny tots in Pre-KG right the way through to Grade 10. Early years children follow the Primary Years Programme (PYP) whereas older children follow the Middle Years Programme (MYP) that serves as preparation for completing the Diploma Programme (DP) .
In this day and age the benefits of multilingualism are not to be underestimated – especially when it comes to career progression opportunities across the globe. SISD recognises this catering for all types of children keen to progress their language skills by offering 3 different language streams to choose from.
Typically British children wanting to gain fluency of an additional language at SISD choose the English+ stream that delivers lessons in English but has an additional 4-5 lessons a week of your choice of French or German. But…. (and this is a big but), you can also enrol your children into a full bilingual English/French or English/German stream that’s delivered on a one week on/one week off basis starting your children off as early age as you want!
One of the questions you could well be asking yourself is whether this would be suitable for your child if you’re all British – or if you can’t speak French or German yourself, and the answer is a resounding yes! Children are like sponges and it never ceases to amaze how quickly children can grasp new tasks – especially when they’re immersed to this level of language.
But it’s not just the language aspect of SISD that’s got tongues talking. Its’ spacious new Secondary School is another eco-friendly campus and has loads of impressive features; From collaborative work spaces that allow for shared learning amongst bigger groups to senior classrooms for smaller groups, the school takes a realistic angle to how their students can be encouraged to be the most productive they can. They’ve even got private study areas that have been set aside for senior students as well as designing a separate common room for senior students, just like back home. In addition, their students can also make use of hi-tech science labs for physics, chemistry and biology along with exhibition rooms for art too.
We’re pretty lucky here as many schools in Dubai have super impressive facilities, but, you would be hard pushed to find another that’s able to offer it’s students the same cutting edge sports facilities that they can use ALL year round. There’s no denying it; SISD have put some serious thought into this; Not only have they got a huge 400 metre outdoor running track with a spectator podium but they’ve also created another indoor 400m track to keep their students running right through Dubai’s summer season.
They also have an indoor Olympic-size pool, 2 tennis courts, a full-sized football AND rugby pitch and, and as close as Dubai might get to the Swiss Alps, a climbing wall that’s set to challenge even the most capable. What’s really nice is that they also make the most from being located adjacent to Dubai Creek and uniquely, their students will get to use the Creek for water polo, rowing and other water sports – How cool is that?
The second phase of the Secondary School is almost complete and in January 2018, there will also be an impressive auditorium, library, robotics lab and other creative amenities including a fabric and textile workshop as well as a fully equipped photo and TV studio that supports this inspiring learning environment.
Their Head of School is of course, Swiss. He’s as committed as the owner, (that’s also also a Parent at the school) to provide a learning environment that will develop critical thinkers and these school-wide initiatives are what wowed the KHDA enough to award the school the Happy Healthy Environment Award last year.
As for the future? Well, once the school is then up to its full capacity, the massive 72,000 square feet campus will cater to students from Pre-KG age right through to Grade 12 and will boast over 2,000 students with their new boarding house too. It’s also pursuing authorisation as an IB World School so with SISD, you will most likely see Dubai’s secondary IB education placed very firmly on the map.
